Baby Photography

One of my lesser-talked about areas of work is baby photography and portraits. Taking photographs of babies is an absolute joy, because kids are so charming and adorable. They love having their photo taken! Another great thing is that I get to photograph the same baby a few times a year, or...

Staying Fit

As well as my photography, another passion (if you can call it that) of mine is keeping fit. I guess personal fitness is more about self-improvement than an actual hobby. Why would anybody put themselves through such gruelling fitness and diet programmes simply because they enjoy it? We keep...

My Equipment

A lot of my photography work is done outdoors – but certainly not all. When it comes to buying equipment, I need to find out what works best for which situation. Most landscape photographers will tell you that the DSLR is pretty much the be-all and end-all of outdoors photography. A...

Types of Photography I love

Landscape is stunning. It can sometimes be scary and bewildering. Growing up on the east coast of England, I was surrounded by landscape throughout my childhood, and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with it. My father used to take us for walks along the rugged coastline, where he would bring his Polaroid and photograph the tides, the rocks, the destructive erosion, and so on. Some of the photographs he took were amazing, and when he bought me my first camera, I was inspired to take coastal photographs myself. I was introduced to landscape painting, particularly that by the Impressionists, such as Monet. But it was when I first...

Photography Experiences

Rather than be limited by a small island, I’m inspired and in awe of its breadth, its depth of scenery, and its potential expressiveness. England has a lot going for it for photographers. There is plenty of rural countryside, rich in colours and forms. There are mountains, landscapes, rivers, canals, streams, lakes, coasts and seas. Being part of an island, it is free from being bound by other lands. There are historical ruins, bulging hills, archaic, historical buildings, such as towers which scrape...

My Travel

Travelling is one of my favourite things to do. England is a great country to travel around, particularly the north west, which is generally higher than the south, has more hills and more rugged countryside to explore. I live in Cumbria, which is home to the Cumbrian mountains, which are the highest mountains in England. They give me great opportunity to take photographs of the surrounding landscapes. Mountains here include Scafell Pike, which is the highest mountain in England. I’ve taken some great early morning photographs from here, which demonstrate the muted, urbane landscape that is atypical of the English countryside, untouched as...
