Wintry WaterwaysIf you've taken any nice snowy, or wintry canal photos during the recent icy weather, we'd like to see them. For a bit of fun and winter cheer, were going to create a special gallery for users own 'wintry canal photos'. More info here - get snapping! But take care. We don't want any accidents on our virtual conscience!
About the Project
Over the coming months and years I plan to travel to all parts of the currently navigable canal system to make a photographic record of the waterways, architecture, craft and infrastructure which make up this unique, labyrinthine and fascinating transport system. You can read more about the background to the project here
The site is based around a continually expanding, keyword searchable stock photography library of high quality canal and narrowboat photos. Other sections include a canals and waterways information page with links to a number of important sources of advice and information for canal users and boat owners, and a waterways books and guides section.
You can perform a basic search of the photo library directly from here:

Ccurrently in the early stages of the photography project, the ultimate goal is to create a photographic record of the UK's canals, narrowboats and waterways infrastructure as they are now - or rather, as the project may well take several years to complete - as they are in the first quarter of the 21st century!
What about written guides? Well, I am approaching the project quite unashamedly as a photographer not a writer. I will endeavour to provide as much accurate information as possible alongside each photograph, and it is hoped that eventually a photographic guide will evolve for each waterway that I cover. But I will leave the written guides to the many expert canal writers already out there! Although, I will say that I am considering setting up a "Wiki" type interface to allow others to contribute as the site develops, so who knows?
I have often been disappointed, when reading other guides and books both on the canals and waterways of Britain, to fnd that there are so often very few, or poor quality, photos to illustrate the text. So, think of this site as being somewhere to come to fill in those gaps. I plan, eventually, to link together all the images of a particular canal or waterway in a linear fashion, such that, indeed, a pictorial guide is provided, ultimately showing all the points of interest along a given route.
Update - December 31st 2009: Our planned Canal and Waterways Business Directory , aimed at providing a single point of access to the websites and contact information of suppliers of products and services related to the waterways and boating industry, is now live. If you own such a business and would like to be included in the directory, or if you would like to know about other advertising options on the Canal and Narrowboat site, please get in touch via our contact page, or simply create an account here and get started on building your listing. There are various options available, from a free basic contact details listing, to a detailed, full page listing, with web-link, image gallery and map. View a sample entry here.
Please visit the site from time to time to find out how the poject is progressing. Feel free to use our email enquiry form, found on our contacts page, to send any useful, constructive suggestions, or to ask any questions.
